My first constant aperture lens. A Sigma 24-60mm F2.8.
I didn’t know what to expect from this lens when I ordered it. I was just buying it because it was good value for money and the F2.8 sounded attractive. I had a small customs issue with the lenses (custom wanted to charge me GST and didn’t send the package out after I had paid for the GST) but apart from that getting the lens from
Cameta Camera was a non-issue. I called them up a couple of times to clarify a few things and the customer service was pretty good. I know a couple of friends that have bought lenses from them and had similar quality of experience so they are definitely a good vendor.
The first thing I did when I got the lens was to check if it had any focusing problems since I had seen on forums that some of the copies had back/front focusing problems. I guess any lens could have this problem but I thought I would make sure. I printed out a focus test chart and checked the lens. It was a relief to find that my copy was OK.
I took a few shots indoors under dim
lighting and had a play with the F2.8 aperture. It was reasonable. But I didn’t have a chance to test it outdoors during the day until the coming weekend. The shallow depth of field from the large aperture really caught me by surprise. In some cases I actually felt there was too much bokeh at F2.8. Another thing that I noticed about this lens was that it focused a bit slower than my kit lens which had USM (HSM is Sigma terminology). Nothing major. We’re talking about a split second slower here. Another thing I noticed was that sometimes it would have problems focusing. Occasionally this happens with my kit lens but not as often as the Sigma. So there is obviously some difference in IQ as well compared to my kit lens.
But these are really just minor issues considering the price of the lens and the constant F2.8 aperture. My 17-85 F4-5.6 kit lens would cost more that the Sigma. However the major realization that I did come to was this lens was probably more suited for portrait shots than anything else.
For my personal preference I think I would prefer something that could go a bit longer. Maybe the Canon 24-105mm L? Who knows. But anyhow I’ve got this lens now so I might as well stick with it for a while. Maybe it will grow on me. I plan to take it to the Winter Garden this weekend and give it another go and see what happens. So we’ll see….
